| Abstract | Creating and sustaining competitive advantage in a dynamic business environment
nowadays is more difficult than before. Information Technology (IT) is an opportunity as
well as threat for enterprises. Spending a huge amount of money to invest a state of art
technology does not guarantee for competitive advantage.
This study evaluates business-IT alignment models, evaluation methods and execution
approaches for implementation. The paper analyses how leading companies in the oil and
gas industry transform their business using the advantages of IT.
A survey was performed to identify alignment issues at Japan Vietnam Petroleum
Company. The most critical issues at the company are partnership and governance. The
company needs getting an active support from the management, improving the capability
for prioritizing the IT investments, exploiting full advantages of the resource, integrating
the available resources across business functions, and improving the flow of data exchange
to enhance the competitive advantage. Because of strong resistance to change, the
company should improve the alignment maturity in two phases: IT to business alignment,
and business to IT alignment. Multiple-methods approach is recommended as a
systematically approach with the team approach as a highlight for the alignment. |
