| Abstract | The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of waterborne polyurethane and soy
protein isolate coating on the mechanical and water resistant properties of coated papers.
The paper properties were determined depending on the contents of SPI.
Water resistant papers were prepared by coating paper with waterborne polyurethane
(WPU) blend with soy protein isolate (SPI) that was denatured by glycerol. Addition of
SPI (40%, 60% and 80% w/w) to WPU composite were coated at the varying coat weight.
Coating weigh increasing could reduce the air permeance and roughness which it also
depend on coating rod. The result revealed that WPU/SPI coated board samples had
significant changes in mechanical properties, to compare with uncoated paper even if it is
not much difference. The effect of WPU/SPI coated board samples on printability has been
also investigated in terms of print mottling, ink rub resistance, ink density and ink gloss.
The boards were printed by IGT flexo printer to simulate the flexography printing. The
WPU/SPI coated board had higher print mottle, but higher in ink rub resistance, ink density
or ink gloss as well compared to the pure SPI board.
Water resistance properties, such as water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) and Cobb
value were affected by coating agent, too. The water absorbency would be reduced when
coat weight increased. However, the absorption time and base paper also had effect the
Cobb value. The result of WPU/SPI coated board samples decreased the water absorbency
compared with pure SPI coated board but it did not as good as wax coating. |
