| Abstract | IoT is an emerging communication field which connects physical world to cyber world via
monitoring and controlling, thus demanding secure message transport with mobility,
interoperability and caching. However, available networking technologies such as ZigBee
and IP have not been able to adequately fulfill such requirements, requiring middleware
and supportive protocols, increasing complexity in application deployment. Therefore
more solutions are being developed through cloud platforms, which handle higher layer
complexities. But, local communication is common in many IoT applications where
locality could be leveraged for higher performance, given less complex innovation friendly
networking solution are available. Finding such architectural supports, Named Data
Networking, one realization of Information Centric Networking has proven several
benefits over IoT, providing a simple request/response communication model based on
named objects. Based on this motivation, this research developed a NDN based smart
home lighting solution, one major use case of smart homes. A prototype was developed
and performance of NDN solution was benchmarked against a cloud based approach with
respect to both qualitative and quantitative aspects. NDN solution facilitates features
available in the cloud from its own architecture, with a higher responsiveness, proving its
potentiality towards IoT. |
