| Abstract | The carbon footprint of humans has increased over the last several years and energy companies
currently perform research and development into new technologies that have the ability to
generate power without contributing to greenhouse gases. Exploration for sustainable wind
power has evolved over the last several decades and the technology for harnessing wind power
has now become viable for providing a low level of primary power. Offshore wind turbines have
become viable as wind over open water has a more consistent statistical behavior than onshore
winds, and new materials and computer technologies have led to reliable storage and
transmission of wind generated power.
This report presents the study on the design procedures and guidance for structural design of
offshore wind turbines. Included in the study are the process of determining environmental
conditions, structural engineering procedures for the blades and support structure, and methods of
structural analysis.
This report does not cover design of non-structural wind turbine components such as nacelle,
rotor, generator and gear box. The tower, which usually extends from somewhere above the
water level to just below the nacelle, is considered a part of the support structure. The structural
design of the tower is therefore covered by this report. |
