| Abstract | In the context of Vietnam’s transition into a market economy, there have been changes in the
relations between employers and employees with more divergent interests between the two
parties. Workplace conflicts in the form of strikes have become social phenomena in recent
years. This research describes the labour disputes and strikes and explores whether human
resource management (HRM) approach or industrial relations (IR) approach are used in
resolution of disputes and strikes in practice. The result of the research suggests that there is a
mixture of both HRM and IR approaches in resolution of strikes, though IR approach is used
more extensively. Strikes do not only have negative implications as widely perceived. There
are cases where companies learnt and improved workplace relations after strike happens.
What important is how parties behave and deal with disputes and strikes. |
