| Abstract | Multimedia and P2P le sharing applications (YouTube, online gaming, BitTorrent
and live streaming of sporting events) are responsible for generating majority of the
trac in the Internet. The ever increasing volume of trac oers new challenges to
trac optimizations in the network. Extracting the topolgical information from the
ISPs via cross layer cooperation to direct trac is a promising solution. IETF is
specifying a protocol called Application Layer Trac Optimization (ALTO) protocol
that provides guidance to the overlay applications to route trac based on abstract
network information from the unerlying network provider, typically ISPs.
This research study focuses on implementation of a prototype called Multi-Cost
ALTO extended DNS. Multi-Cost ALTO is a proposed extension of baseline ALTO
which supports multiple cost types and cost modes in a single transaction of endpoint
cost query. It is integrated with a DNS server for the prototype. The major part of the
research is focused on design, implementation and analysis of the ALTO Quality Man-
ager (AQM), which is the decision module of the prototype. To motivate the adoption
of Multi-Cost ALTO, numerical results are provided in terms of the amount of trac
volume saved from adopting Multi-Cost ALTO over baseline ALTO. The research study
also focuses on benets of ALTO integration in Content Delivery Networks (CDN) and
Peer to Peer (P2P) applications. |
