| Abstract | Management control systems are "guiding" devices aimed at strategy formulation and
implementation of organizational plans. Formal management control systems are at the root
of corporate performance, which can ensure success in the long run.
In Myanmar, since over the last ten years, extensive privatization led by the government,
deregulation, reinforcement of shareholder power, and emergence of new private films have
resulted in important changes in the business and economics paradigms. The study examines
the role of private sector in the economy, and its development in Myanmar.
Although a lot of private companies are conducting their businesses in several sectors, some
companies ignore the need for formal management control systems. The companies, which
are led by effective management teams use formal managerial concepts, methods and
systems aligned to specific strategies, and avail opportunities of emerging businesses in a
more competitive environment. The study, therefore, analyzes the management control
practices of private companies in Myanmar with a view to know the relationship between
theories and practices in the thirty selected private companies- both foreign and Myanmar
companies.
In addition, in depth case study of Serge Pun and Associates (Myanmar) Company Limited
has been canied out to analyze how the company implements its strategies successfully
under the control of efficient management.
Finally, the study provides conclusions, on the practices and processes of management
control systems in private firms in Myanmar; and recommendations, to improve their
performances by using more effective management control processes in coming days. |
