| Abstract | Pumped-piped systems (PPS) are widely constructed with support from Vietnamese
Government and UNICEF to provide safe drinking water for people in rural area. But in
fact the target of the project is only to a little extent satisfactory. Only 36% interviewed
people, who are living in study area, use water from PPS for drinking and cooking
purposes.
The conventional treatment plant seems to function mainly for iron and manganese
removal but water quality analysis showed that nearly 50% of the sample have high iron
and manganese concentration which cause "taste" and "color" as habitants complaining.
Improper design, weak management and poor operation and maintenance in all pumpedpiped
systems are major reasons.
To reach the target, it needs an upgrading of the facilities and improvement of the
knowledge of operators in all systems, suggestion on how to improve the technical as
well as managerial of PPS are given. |
