| Abstract | Communication is essential for any individual to be successful in life and the same is also
applicable to organizations and institutes at a large scale. With technological advancement,
many methods got invented to communicate effectively and efficiently and is a main building
block for infrastructure of any developing nation. This study focuses on telecommunication
sector and an effort has been put to improve it's functional efficiency by means of changing
ownership structure through privatization.
Telecommunications have come a long way since Samuel F.B. Morse, the inventor of
magnetic telegraphy, established the world's telecommunication facility in 1844. Morse's
"System" consisted of two magnetic keys connected by a single line that ran from Baltimore
to Washington, DC. Telegraph soon spanned the globe and was rapidly augmented by telex
and telephone, then wireless broadcast systems. These, in turn, have been supplanted by an
astoundingly vast and growing a1rny of ever-more-sophisticated telecommunications
capabilities: cellular phones, faxes, personal computer modems, and online databanks.
With improving strengths of individual companies and their bargaining power in te1ms of
technological capabilities, in developing countries, privatization has become the most widely
used and most effective way to carry out refo1m in the telecommunications industry in terms
of technological upgradation. This process shotiens the technological development pattern
and brings in new talents and techniques after breaking the conventional, hierarchical
governing system of most of the developing nations. Previously this sector was meticulously
protected, as it is one of the very strategic competitive capabilities of any country. Later with
opening of the economy of many countries and blurring off the global markets, the protective
nations needed to realign their strategies to cope up with the trend in the market to be more
competitive to sustain and ensure continuous development.
In this study, an effo1i has been taken to draw the possible benefits and pros and cons of
privatization of telecommunication sector in Kyrgyzstan, which was under control of state
government earlier. The study also compares and analyzes five different countries, who are
developing at a faster rate and the impact of telecom sector in development of those countries.
This study could be used as a guideline for new countries who wants to develop their telecom
sectors through privatization and be more competitive in the world market place. |
