| Abstract | Over the last few years, the financial crisis had attacked Thailand and some other countries in
the Asian region pushing pressures on the currencies of such countries. The situation in these
countries deteriorated particularly in the financial sectors and the property sectors. In response
to the crisis, Thailand had implemented the economic adjustment program which the financial
sector restructuring is the foundation. The Bank of Thailand also implemented monetary
policy to support the financial sector restructuring. Such policy contributed to the changes in
interest rates structure in the money markets.
The objectives of this research are to study the structure of Thailand's money-market rates
both before and after the crisis, and to study the effects of the financial restructuring on the
interest rates structure of the money markets.
Major findings indicate that the interest rates had increased after the baht was allowed to float
due to the tight monetary policy which aimed to stabilize the baht. When the economy showed
the sign of recovery and the exchange rate was stable, the monetary policy was eased and led
to a decreasing trend of the interest rates in the money markets. |
