| Abstract | The trend of the number of mobile phone subscribers is going to become excess that of fixedline telephone in the near future, additionally the development of high speed data application
in mobile phone service like mobile Internet in the third generation influences on increasing
more players in the industry. The telecommunication liberalization trend of the world being
widespread to several countries including countries in Asia-Pacific region yields increasing
competition in both price and service quality among the mobile phone service operators. In
addition, technology leapfrogging allows new entrant operators reaching for second
generation mobile phone with cheaper investment and taking short period of time as well as
the technological change develops swiftly.
Thus the existing mobile phone service providers are squeezed to develop their technological
capabilities to keep their customer base as well as introduce new value added services to
tempt more new customers so as to be competitive to the advent of sound service providers
from abroad. To enhance technological capability, technological capability assessment of
mobile phone service providers is executed to identify the areas of weaknesses and then
followed by the suggestion for enhancement.
Technological capability assessment is can-ied out through the indicators widely used for the
firm in mobile phone service industry. In the study, the firm under study, Advanced Info
Service Plc (AIS), can be assessed in technological capabilities involved in the firm. The
available technological capability assessment of the state-of-the-art firm, SingTel Mobile Pte,
is required for determining the technological capability gap between AIS and SingTel Mobile.
Based on the available information, the result of the study indicates that creation capability
does not exist in both AIS and SingTel Mobile because research and development activities
are not encouraged. The site erection capability of AIS is superior to SingTel due to AIS'
experience through more number of site erections and being less reliance on external
assistance agencies. The process capability of SingTel is superior to AIS resulting from force
of the strict regulation in quality of service standard in Singapore affecting to cellular network
performance improvement. For servicing capability, most of its dimensions of SingTel are
superior to AIS owing to highly competitive liberalized market in Singapore presses service
providers concentrating on customer service and customer satisfaction. |
