| Abstract | In this turbulent, competitive climate in the region, it is necessity for Myanmar to develop all
business sectors in order to cope with world economic advancement. Moreover, the changes
in the nature of employment toward more knowledge-based, skill and empowerment are more
required than ever before. Human resources become the key aspect of the most dynamic and
challenging business environment in Myanmar. Along with the growing rate of tourists, hotel
industry serves as a key role in supporting the tourism by providing the accommodation
facilities to both local and international tourists.
This research attempts to study and analyze the cuffent practices of human resource
management of the hotel industry in Myanmar and to suggest the most appropriate strategies
for future development by improving manpower performance and quality of services. The
survey was conducted by direct interview and questionnaires throughout 13 foreign
investment hotels and 9 biggest local investment hotels located in Yangon, the capital of
Myanmar.
According to the survey, only 50% of hotels have separate human resources depaitment. From
the overall opinion of surveyed hotels, 44.4% see human resources management as very
important, 51 % important but 5.6% which comes from local managers see as not important.
The survey results and in-depth interviews reveal that the hoteliers in Myanmar are facing the
problem of not only finding skilled workers with relevant experience but also of lacking
appropriate and sufficient training facilities. The findings of this research study suggest that
the hotel industry in Myanmar still needs to develop its manpower and human resource
management systems in order that it may improve service quality and develop the hotel
industry to international standards.
Recommendations are made for the relevant area of the findings which may be applied as the
guideline for utilizing effective labor force and establishing efficient human resource
management for the future development of the hotel industry in Myanmar. |
