| Abstract | Just-In-Time (JIT) has received considerable interest because it allows a company to produce
high quality products with reduced waste and with increased levels of productivity. Generally, a
JIT system is described as a system to produce and deliver finished goods just in time to be sold,
sub-assemblies just in time to be assembled into finished goods and purchased materials just in
time to be transformed into fabricated parts. The well-acknowledged benefits of JIT includes low
scrap cost, low inventory cost, higher quality of parts purchased, fast response to design changes
and administrative efficiency. The JIT system has been tremendously successful in Japan and has
yielded considerable benefits. Can it be successful in Vietnam?
The Coats Phong Phu is a typical textile joint venture between Coats Viyella Pie. (the United
Kingdom) and Phong Phu Textile Company (Vietnam) in Hochiminh city, Vietnam. The
company's main products are apparel sewing and embroidery and footwear sewing thread.
Cun-ently, the company is very interest in matching customer's demand with low cost, high
quality and low waste. As a result, since 1998, the company has applied JIT philosophy into its
manufacturing system to enhance its competitive edge in the thread industry.
The research took the sewing thread factory of the Coats Phong Phu as a case of JIT application
to improve its productivity. It primarily analyzed a sewing thread factory of the Coats Phong Phu
in terms of its manufacturing process association with the JIT philosophy. The analysis has shed
light on the problems the company is facing in implementing the JIT philosophy. Against the
background, such recommendations for improvement with further facilitation the process will be
