| Abstract | Myanmar with its "Close-Door" policy since 1962 has become the "least Developed
Country" in 1987. Again with the combination effects of political instability and economic
chaos Myanmar is in a tumbling state up to this date. Unable to suffer the hardships for
more than a decade, therefore, the people from Myanmar migrate to other countries. On the
other hand Thailand, with its rapid economic growth and democratic rule becomes
attracted for Myanmar, a neighbouring country. Therefore, many men and women from
Myanmar cross the border and enter into Thailand for a better life.
Interviewing illegal migrants from three specific areas, ie. Maesod, Chiangmai, and
Mahachai, this study aims at the reasons from Myanmar migrate into Thailand as well as
the consequences and impacts of migration. In order to achieve these objectives
exploratory research methodology was employed in this study. The respondents in this
survey were illegal migrants who have no intention to live permanently although they may
reside long enough to earn money and wait for the bettennent of the situation of their
origin country - Myanmar. |
