| Abstract | This study examined problems and prospects of traditional rural industiial development in
the upper Andhikhola watershed of Nepal. The traditional rural enterprises production
performances of different types rural industries, demand and supply of products,
infrastructure condition, capital investment, employment situation, and strength, wealrness
and opportunities of the industries were incorporated in the study.
Entrepreneurs were producing agriculture tools and equipments, leather goods, ornaments
and garments using their inherited skill. A few entrepreneurs had attended skill
development. Most industrial products were for local market. Entrepreneurs' major source
of income was industries. Agriculture tools and equipment making, and garment industries
received raw materials from the costumers themselves, whereas leather goods making and
ornament making industries bought raw materials from the market. Infrastructure like
sheds and buildings were in poor condition. Most industrial equipments were old and
manual type. Some of the raw materials were available at the local level and others were
being impo1ied from the regional market centers. Ornaments making industries required
more investment in comparison to other industries, because they used gold and silver as
raw materials. All types of rural industries had made some investments, but that was
inadequate to run them effectively. Capital investment was very low, due to entrepreneurs,
pove1iy. They could not get credit from the bank due to lack of collateral. Private
moneylenders were charging high interest rate. A new policy is required to provide credit
for the improvement and sustainability of the industries. There is a possibility of
diversification of industrial products of all types of industries. Rural industrial goods have
potential market because of cheaper labor cost. Therefore, improvement of rural industries
is required through the provision of advanced training for concerned entrepreneurs.
