| Abstract | This study is based on a survey of 81 farmers through personal interviews from four
different districts in Bonteay Meanchey province, Cambodia from January 2001 to April
2001 . The aim of the study was to study the current status of agricultural mechanization in
Bonteay Meanchey province, to determine the cost of land preparation and cost of
production for rice crop as well as to compare the yield, labor use, and income from rice
crop in three farm categories. The total income of the household in three fa1m categories
were also compared. The main sources of farm power are human labor, drought animals,
power tillers and tractors. The three farm categories are farms using animal drought power,
power tillers and tractors.
The current status of agricultural mechanization in Bonteay Meanchey province has been
gradually increasing. Power tillers are becoming quite popular in the province.
The labor utilization for land preparation (for broadcasted rice) on fa1ms using drought
animals (18.1 person-day/ha) was high compared to farms using power tillers (3 .2 personday/ha) and tractor (0.6person-day/ha). And land preparation for transplanted rice also has
high labor use on farm using drought animal (18.3 person-day/ha) compared to farm using
power tiller (5.4 person-day/ha) and tractor (3.1 person-day /ha). The average yield was 2.3
tons per hectare for transplanted rice and 2.17 tons per hectare for broadcasted rice crop.
The cost of land preparation of one hectare, farms owners using tractors (US$ 20.2); using
power tilliers (US$ 40.4); and using drough animal (US$ 41.8). The cost of production of
rice by using drough animal (US$ 160.7) per hectare was significantly higher than cost of
production for power tiller farms (US$ 113.3) and using tractors (US$ 88.8)
Farmers had income from using drough animal lower than farmers using power tillers and
using tractors.
The average family annual income using different categories ( drough animal, power tillers,
and tractors), therefore, farmers using drough animal lower income than farmers using
power tillers and tractors. |
