| Abstract | Coastal ecosystem is complex, sensitive and is subject to influences of nature as well as
human interference. The Cox's Bazar coastal zone has a great importance since prehistoric times for the abundance of natural resources such as intertidal flood plain, accreted
mud flat, sand dunes, beaches, mangroves, fisheries as well as numerous water ways. Due
to the lack of appropriate guidelines for natural resource conservation and utilization,
land/resource use conflicts occur in the coastal zone. Remote sensing data of Landsat TM
and thematic information are analyzed using ENVI and GIS ArcView software to select
the suitable area for shrimp farm, salt bed, mangrove afforestation and coastal tourism
development. Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) technique was conducted to collect the
primary data, where observation and community level group interview approaches were
applied to focus the local community opinion to analyze their situation as well as to assess
the coastal natural resources, Land use patterns, problems and potentials. Problem tree,
seasonal calendar, Venn diagram, transect and spot map were use in the present study. The
spatial development has clearly indicated that suitable areas for the establishment of
shrimp farm, salt bed and mangrove afforestation are 3274.74, 1929.06 and 6230.16, where
the moderate suitable areas 1256.40, 1895.13 and 906.48, and not suitable areas 237.42,
1524.24 and 343.17 ha respectively. The sandy beaches are found suitable for coastal
tourism development. Most of the suitable areas of the present study coincide with the
existing land use map that is important to make land use zoning to locate suitable areas for
multiple uses of the coastal zone. Establishment of zones in Cox's Bazar coast is important
to identify the suitable zones as meeting certain objectives to ensure optimal allocation of
resources and minimization of conflicts between different users as well as in controlling
environmental deterioration and avoiding adverse social interactions. |
