| Abstract | In this competitive and globalized construction market, it is necessary for the
Nepalese private construction firms to improve their technical and managerial
performance in addition to financial capability because they are financially,
managerially and technically weaker than foreign firms. One of the possible ways of
improving performance is by improving the performance of their employees.
Implementing an effective performance appraisal system in their firms would be a
way of improving performance.
This study focuses on performance appraisal in the domestic private construction
firms. It includes identifying performance appraisal needs, identifying the problems in
implementing Performance Appraisal system and in doing fair performance appraisal,
PA training status, and evaluation of performance appraisal system. In addition, it
deals briefly with the present status of other Human Resource Development activities
like Orientation, Career Planning, Development, and Training and Development, and
the characteristics of the films. Construction firms' approach to PA is also discussed.
From this study, lack of trained appraisers, lack of training centers in the private
sector, and improper use of PA are observed. The high need for PA and PA training
are realized throughout the private construction films. The study also shows that the
present PA systems in the private construction films are not effective and the films'
approaches to PA are not as required by the new directions and values emerging in
today's organizations. |
