| Abstract | The Bangkok sewer and MRT Blue line tunnels are used to evaluate the
prediction of sh01t-term undrained ground deformations in Bangkok subsoils, by the
analytical solutions and 2D numerical analysis using PLAXIS software. The gap
parameters are estimated following the procedure suggested by Lee et al. (1992), and
presented in equivalent ground loss proposed by Loganathan and Poulos (1998). The
estimated equivalent ground losses are compared with those back-calculated from
observed surface settlements by using empirical method (Peck's method). The estimated
gap parameters are then used for 2D numerical analysis using PLAXIS and analytical
solutions by Verruijt & Booker (1996), Loganathan & Poulos (1998), and Bobet (2001).
With an appropriate estimation of the gap parameter in small soil yielding condition, the
analytical methods appear to be useful for a preliminary design of tunnel to predict the
tunneling-induced settlements in Bangkok subsoil. While the analytical solutions
underpredict the settlements in soft clay layer where the elastoplastic deformation is
significant, numerical analyses can cover these cases and give reasonable agreement
with field observations. A modification of Bobet (2001) solution is obtained by
considering the oval-shaped pattern of radial ground movement around the tunnel
section and by investigating for the two extreme conditions at the ground-liner interface.
The ground deformations are effected by this oval-shaped pattern as the ground-liner
interface is no slip, but not effected as this interface condition is full slip. |
