| Abstract | It is well known that dynamic properties of tall buildings play an important role in the analysis
and design of these structures. In this study, dynamic properties of tall buildings in Bangkok
are identified from their ambient vibrations. A frequency-domain identification method,
developed by Trifunac, is adopted. Some modifications are also made to this method in order
to extract more detailed information ibration mode shapes from the ambient responses.
Three uniaxial accelerometers and one portable high-resolution recorder are employed to
measure and record ambient vibrations. Human exciters are also used for exciting some
vibration modes that do not significantly participate in the ambient responses. It is shown that
the use of human exciters has greatly improved the accuracy of the obtained results. Several
digital signal processing techniques are applied; these techniques are, for example, FFT,
moving average, cosine-ta~r window, etc. Nine reinforced concrete buildings with heights
between I 00 m and 150 m in Bangkok are selected in this study. In each building, natural
frequencies, damping ratios, and vibration mode shapes of the first four to six translational and
torsional modes are successfully and accurately identified. It is also found that some modes
exhibit rather complex motions consisted of translational and torsional motions.
