| Abstract | Cost control is the primary function of project management enabling accomplishment of
operations at minimum cost and therefore it is considered as one of key elements in achieving
profit optimization goal of construction companies. Despite the importance of cost control,
many small and medium sized construction companies operate without effective cost control
system. Problems related with lack of cost control knowledge of project personnel, minimum
formal cost control procedure and the harshness and complexity of existing cost control
software are identified as the primary reasons causing the condition. Considering the problems
as crucial factors in developing cost control system, this study aims to demonstrate the
utilization of computer technology in furnishing a simple yet robust cost control system, which
can act as the change catalyst to enhance the system of the companies.
In achieving the objectives, Microsoft Access 2000 is utilized to construct the system
database and Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 is used in establishing user interfaces and furnishing
the process part of the system. The system developed in this study furnishes practical inputting
mechanisms and a graphical means in presenting the cost performance. In addition, it provides
a feature in identifying problem area and activities causing cost deficient performance. With
its capability to run as a stand alone system and all of its practical yet comprehensive features,
the system developed in this study can furnish an alternative in enhancing cost control system
in the companies. |
