| Abstract | Large diameter bored piles are extensively used in the construction industry in
and around the Bangkok area. One of the major problems while pouring such piles
using tremie pipes is the bleeding of fresh concrete. This leads to strength and
durability problems in the upper portion of the pile due to increased water-binder
ratio. This research focuses on finding an effective mix design that may be used in the
wet process tremie concreting of large diameter bored piles with reduced bleeding
properties without significantly affecting the strength, workability and setting time of
the mix. Emphasis is placed on using locally available raw material to achieve the set
goal.
Results of tests conducted indicate that though rice husk ash and silica fume
decrease bleeding, their affect on the other properties of interest is not complimentary.
However, a 10-20% replacement of cement with Fly Ash (for the currently used mix
design in the field), not only reduces the bleeding by approximately 25% but also
favorably affects the strength, setting time and workability of the mix. |
