| Abstract | A two dimensional numerical model is developed to simulate the tsunami propagation in
open sea. The tsunami propagation, which has a relatively small height compared to its
length, is modeled using the shallow water equations. The method used to solve these
equations is the semi implicit characteristic-based split Finite Element Method which was
first proposed by Zienkiewicz and Codina in 1995.
Five case studies were proposed in this study to verify the numerical model based on the
water elevation, velocity, and pressure. The basic wave propagation in a frictionless
rectangular channel is modeled in case 1. The influence of the channel shape in its width
and depth is analyzed in Case 2 and Case 3. Case 4 is about the wave propagation in a
circular region which is suitable to model the tsunami wave generated by an earthquake.
And finally a wave propagation passing a breakwater structure is modeled and analyzed in
case 5.
The results of all these case studies show that the numerical model can do tsunami
propagation well.
