| Abstract | The main reason to setup an in-house lens fabrication laboratory is to improve
prescription work service at the retailing end. When outsourcing, ophthalmologists are
subjected to the time element and the errors of that outsourcing source. Hence, in-house
prescription work is important to increase quality of prescription lens.
For the ophthalmologist considering diversification by setting up an in-house lens
fabrication lab, the benefits are numerous: the ability to trim costs, speed up delivery time
of glasses, and offer quality control. Perhaps the two most compelling reasons for doing
in-house work are patient satisfaction and additional profits.
The decision to go with an in-house lab is an important one, and choosing the proper
equipment for the practice is also a large part of the decision. A complete line of
equipments that can be installed include edgers, lensometer, drill, polish, groove, and
shape manipulation. However, careful planning and analysis are key to the decision to
undertake this commitment. Some of the factors to consider are prescription volume, the
costs of added personnel and inventory, space requirements, changes necessary to the
physical office, and insurance issues.
