| Abstract | With the current market economy, Cambodian SME sector remains one of the core engines
of economic growth. In fact, SMEs play a crucial role as job creation, regional and rural
development, service to local community, and supporting role of larger enterprises. As
Cambodia becomes more integrated with international markets through its membership in
the World Trade Organization and ASEAN, it will be vital for SMEs to become more
competitive in order to strive to survive in such a highly competitive and fast changing
business environment. However, the development of the sector remains limited due to the
fact that managers of small companies in Cambodia are little knowledgeable about
business management skills - finance, marketing, and human resources management.
The objectives of the research are (i) to study the current situation of SMEs in Cambodia
especially the specific problems of marketing, financial, and human resources management
practices, (ii) to assess the management practices in Cambodian SMEs, and (iii) to find the
way forward to develop and promote Cambodian SME sector.
The research study finds out that most of private companies in Cambodia prepare
marketing plan based on the input from existing customers. It is further discovered that
financial statement is just prepared for reporting to statistical, tax and other state bodies
rather than for operative management of the company and for analyzing the company's
financial position and performance. Regarding the HRM practices, they are generally
viewed as not good enough.
