| Abstract | The close collaboration of Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) providers and
Original Brand Manufacturing (OBM) companies made computer, communication,
and consumer electronic products from product concept to delivery a reality. The
EMS providers develop their competitiveness in terms of cost reduction, global
logistics, quality stability, on-time delivery, and joint design; whereas, the OBM
companies devote to create product inception, brand value, marketing strategies, and
sales channels. The collaboration between EMS providers and OBM companies form
a win-win strategy to educate, explore and capture the markets.
This research attempts to find out the role of information technology in light to the
competitiveness of EMS providers through questionnaire survey and in-depth
interviews. The survey outcome was aimed in arriving insights on IT adoption
categories in EMS firms, IT need for their business activities, and IT impact on
competitiveness in the electronics manufacturing services provider.
The main findings from the questionnaire survey and in-depth interview are as below:
First, disperse location of departments increase information technology utilization
frequency and categories. Second, information technologies' communication function
is more attractive than decision-making function to middle management level. Third,
the core competitiveness from information technologies in the benchmarked EMS
firm can be grouped into cost advantage and service differentiation. |
