| Abstract | Problem-based learning (PBL) has become a popular approach for teaching in medical
schools due to its effectiveness in imparting clinical reasoning skills. But the PBL does not
make very efficient use of the instructor's time since it requires an instructor to spend large
amounts of time with small groups of students. Recently the COMET intelligent tutoring
system was developed in order to automate the process of medical PBL so that students
may obtain more practice than is available with the instructors' limited time. COMET
generates hints to guide group problem solving by observing student actions in creating the
problem solution. As is typical in group problem solving situations, students engage in a
significant amount of discussion before and during the process of crafting the solution.
This discussion takes place through COMET's group chat facility. The automated tutor
could make more timely and more effective interventions if it was capable of
understanding the students' chat. This thesis develops and evaluates a system that can
track such chat. The system makes use of the UMLS medical ontology to extract and
analyze the medical terms in the chat. The system is capable of identifying what topics the
students are discussing as well as when the topic changes, with a runtime performance that
is sufficient for practical application. Evaluation is conducted on chat logs from COMET
and transcripts of taped human tutored PBL sessions at a medical school. |
