| Abstract | Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are being used increasingly to predict and forecast water
resources variables. An artificial neural network (ANN) is a flexible mathematical stmcture,
which is capable of identifying complex nonlinear relationship between input and output data
sets. Daily flow forecasting is important in coastal rivers and estuaries for the purposes of
flood control and mitigation. The present study demonstrates the application of NNs to realtime forecasting of daily river stages and flood mnoff.
A Neural Network Model with Back-Propagation Algorithm (BPNN) is presented for
forecasting daily water levels and discharges at two gauging stations, namely, Z 13 and Z 14
with reliable records of the Chanthaburi River Basin, Thailand. One day and two days ahead
forecasting were considered for these stations. In this technique, the past and present values
of river flows and water levels with the rainfall are incorporated with the future values of
river flows and water levels. The principle of back-propagation is a calculation scheme that
enhances the amount of adjustment for the weight values and ultimately shortens the learning
time.
The simulation results have shown that the less complex network sizes comprising with one
hidden layer are suitable. It was found that back-propagation models provide satisfactory
accurate forecast values at these stations. As such, they can serve as a good tool for use in
daily flow forecasting. |
