| Abstract | Acoustic a Doppler velocimeter (ADV) measurement of the flow velocities in combined
waves and current with smooth and ripple beds is reported. The experimentation study in
laboratory with flat bed and ripples, 17.5 cm in length and 5.0 cm in height. The direction of
the current comprises wave with a following current and wave with an opposing current. The
theory of Tanaka and Shuto (1981), Freds0e and Deigaard (1992) and Madsen (1993) have
been applied to validated with the experimental data.
The effects of introducing the wave and increasing the wave height are to increase the mean
velocity near the bed and decrease it in the upper layer on following current while that of the
opposite effect in case of opposing current to that found for wave with the following current.
The orbital amplitude to bed roughness ratio (alk,,) ranges from 3 .3 to 18.6 for wave with
following current and ranges from 9.2 to 27 for wave with opposing current over smooth bed.
The ripple bed case, a/k11 ranges from 0.02 to 0.08 for wave with following cunent while that
of wave with opposing current is 0.06 to 0.19. Almost experimental data are found within the
laminar - rough turbulent transition regime.
The validation with the experimental data shows that the theory of Madsen (1993) is good
agreement with measured mean velocity profile over smooth bed while that of Freds0e and
Deigaard (1992) agrees with it over ripple bed. |
