| Abstract | Domestic wastewater probably contains high amounts of pathogenic microorganisms.
Releasing of wastewater to the natural water systems can cause waterborne outbreaks. Small
wastewater treatment system is suitable and necessary for an area where sewer system or
central wastewater treatment plant is impossible. Aerobic attached-growth reactor was
previously studied for the efficiency in eliminating organic matter. This study was carried out
to investigate a role of small wastewater treatment system in protecting waterborne diseases.
At the beginning, biofilm was developed in reactors by prepared synthetic wastewater. The
experiments were conducted after a steady state indicated by COD removal. Domestic
wastewater was used as a source of coliform organisms.
The system has the ability of 89.81 % in removing fecal coliform from domestic wastewater.
Higher amount of fecal coliform was removed in the lower half of column. Because in
sorption experiment, biological media adsorbed small amount of coliform organisms,
straining is expected to be an important mechanism in removing fecal coliform in the reactor.
From fate experiment, fecal coliform can stay several days in the reactor with the reduction
rate constant of 0.137 day" 1

Although aerobic attached-growth reactor was effective to eliminate organic matter in
domestic wastewater, a role of the system in protecting waterborne diseases was not
completely successful. Eighty ninth percent of fecal coliform removal is not enough to meet
an acceptable level. Effluent has to be carefully considered for uses and applications in the
further steps.
