| Abstract | The physical development activities tend to affect the existence of urban green spaces in
cities. Urban green spaces are essential to address micro-climate issues. Although Bandung
City was famous as a garden city in the past, maintaining an adequate extent of green space
as mitigation and adaptation measure for local warming has become difficult due to the
rapid rate of land use changes for various urban purposes. A survey conducted with a
stratified random sample of residents revealed that majority of them considered improving
micro-climatic conditions as the main function of green space at the city level but not at the
individual premises level. The local authority's recognition of green space only as a public
amenity is a barrier in ensuring a hierarchy of green spaces. It was also revealed that the
city authority is not effective in implementing command and control measures to ensure
adequate green spaces at sub-city level. Therefore, the study emphasizes the need of
efficient law enforcement and public private partnerships in sharing the role of managing
urban green spaces. |
