| Abstract | This study describes the Kelani and Kalu river systems, whose waters are the main drinking
water source for the capital and the urbanised West Coast of Sri Lanka. Results obtained in the
water quality determinations over a period of six years and one set of samples collected in
1999 are presented, along with analysis of the results indicating variations and trends. Some
variations with precipitation pattern and level of flow are also indicated. It appears that there
has been a consistent rainfall and flow pattern during the period of this study. The level of pH
in Kelani is low and BOD values are also quite high along with occasionally high Total
Coliform counts that may have detrimental effects on uses such as bathing and also as a
drinking water supply source. The loads of Nitrogen, Phosphorous, BOD and other parameters
based on annual runoff and monthly concentration results are given. An attempt has been
made to model the catchment and stream network using the GIS based Pollution LOAD
model. Digitised Terrain Elevation Data and a Digital Elevation Model of the study area, the
river network, administrative boundaries, along with details of land use are presented.
Recommendations for the management of the river basins for the continued exploitation for
drinking water supply, power generation and other uses are included with the conclusions. |
