| Abstract | The study looks into the solid waste and energy generated in a palm oil mill plant in
Krabi Province, Thailand.
The windrow composting of Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB), Palm Press Fiber (PPF) and
decanter sludge were set up. Each compost piles was set up at an initial C:N ratio of 39: 1. Test
were conducted with various of raw materials. The chemical and physical parameters were
observed throughout the composting period. In pile with decanter sludge used as substrate
material, the greatest reduction in the C:N ratio within 80 days was obtained.
The cogeneration system produces both energy and steam serving to the plant. The
available energy analysis further shows that during off peak period, the combination between
16% of press EFB and 76% of fiber generated per hour can provide more than enough energy
requirement to the mill. Energy conservation recommendations are, thus, concentrated in
improving the performance of the fuel combustion efficiency.
The main impediments to solid waste management in the plant are the practically zero
value of the waste disposal. The study recommends researches towards finding alternative uses
for the solid residue that may increases its value, and possible ways of the energy conservation
opportunities. |
