| Abstract | Mobile IP provides mobility support for hosts connected to the Internet without
changing their IP addresses. In this paper we propose a Handover strategy called Low Loss
Mobile IP (LLMIP) and evaluate its performance compared to Mobile IP (MIP) for TCP
Application in wireless environment. The network scenario considered involves Wide Area
Network and Local Area Network. The influence of the offered traffic characteristics,
transmission speed and delay, Internet delay behavior, TCP parameters and handover rate on
network performance are investigated.
It is known that performance of MIP may result in an unacceptable Quality of Service
for TCP Applications because it is very sensitive to handover rates and average user session
lengths. By these effects, a web page or other applications over TCP will suffer from delay and
reduced throughput. The proposed strategy enhances MIP scheme by introducing a handover
buffer in MIP router. LLMIP delivers stable performance for all handover rates and a broad
range of session duration while keeping unmodified to transport layer. Simulation results show
considerable performance improvements in terms of throughput, delay, TCP efficiency and
Packets loss for absent destination during a handoff period. The proposed handover strategy is
appropriate for most applications especially those, which are throughput critical. |
