| Abstract | Bai Bang Paper Company is the only integrated kraft pulp and paper mill in Vietnam. It has
been using mixture of bamboo and eucalyptus, as it's main raw materials. The mill modified
the C-E-H-H bleaching sequence by introducing hydrogen peroxide to the oxidative
extraction stage. The existing bleaching sequence is C-E/P-H-H. The use of chlorine and
hypochlorite in bleaching has caused some problems on the pulp quality and environment.
This study briefly discusses the changes needed in order to convert the existing bleaching
process from old fashion bleaching to ECF bleaching. The use of chlorine dioxide as main
bleaching agent was studied to find out the optimum bleaching conditions for the mill. The
objective of this study was to obtain the 85-87% ISO brightness of bleached pulp with an
acceptable loss of viscosity and reasonable bleaching chemical consumption. Oxygen
delignification stage was introduced into the process prior to bleaching to reduce the inlet
kappa number to bleaching. Oxygen reinforcement in the alkali extraction stage was
introduced, as well.
The quality of bleached pulp increased both in brightness and physical properties. The
pollution load from the effluent would be reduced significantly in term of COD, BOD, and
especially the AOX content because of oxygen delignification and ECF bleaching.
Key words: Bamboo, Eucalyptus, mixed pulp, ECF bleaching, chlorine dioxide, brightness,
viscosity, tensile, tearing resistance. |
