| Abstract | Recycling paper mills have always been puzzled with the role of fines in the production
process. On the one hand, losing fines reflects itself directly on production cost. On the other
hand, the possibility of improving papermaking quality of the fines-rich pulp is very limited.
Although considerable work has been reported on the classification of mechanical pulp,
literature references to the use of fractionation on upgrading of the OCC are few, even fewer
to consider the impact of refining on recycled pulp furnish with and without short fiber
fraction.
This study was undertaken to determine the significance of fractionation on the effectiveness
of the fractionation process on developing papermaking quality of the OCC pulp. The
papermaking potential of refined OCC pulp at different conditions of fractionation was
evaluated and its implications were discussed. The limitations of the fractionation for
improving the paper making quality of the fines-rich furnish were highlighted. |
