| Abstract | The Information Age is rapidly becoming the age of distanced communication - we
increasingly meet, not in the physical sense of being in the same place, but in the electronic
sense of sharing a "cyberspace". This is evidenced by the growing importance of bulletin
boards, chat rooms, groupware, electronic marketplaces and agora. The irrestable push
towards globalization and internationalization will make these digital abstractions essential,
unavoidable parts of our lives.
Our project investigates the use of agent technology to aid, control, and humanise a
typical chat environment. Our work is aimed at developing agent frameworks which will be
useful in a wide range of shared infospaces, and for a wide range of agent behaviors.
We have developed three chat agents as examples of the agent framework we are
interested in. The chat "helper" attempts to answer user's questions, adapting itself to the
ability of the user based on their past requests and responses. The chat "policeman" is a
guardian for the often fractious chat community. It monitors the "rooms" of the chat space,
handing out warning to malcontents, and perhaps even banning repeated offenders. The agent
must analyse the behavior of users and maintain a profile on the people it encounters. The
chat "talker" addresses a real problem with chat systems - the lack of anyone to talk with. The
talker will start a conversation with a user, and exhibits emotional responses based on how
the conversation develops. |
