| Abstract | This study attempts to determine the relative competitiveness of Xi'an's tourism
destination compared with other selected tourism cities in China in terms of identified factors.
Thirteen factors affecting tourism attractiveness were identified through literature review
as well as interviews with experts in the tourism industry. These factors were divided into three
criteria, that is, "Core Attractions", "Services and Facilities" and "Accessibility and
Transportation". By using the methodology of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), the factors
were ranked on their importance; "Cultural and Historical Attractions" was found to be the most
important factor; "Cost of Services" and "Transport to" were the least important. Taken into
account these factors and their importance, an evaluation model for studying the relative
competitiveness of tourism destination was suggested. The evaluation results indicated that
Beijing was the most competitive tourism city based on attractiveness; Xi'an ranked the second,
followed by Shanghai, Guangzhou, and lastly Kunming. Meanwhile, the competitors of Xi'an's
tourism destination were analyzed under different ranked factors; the major problems existed in
Xi'an's tourism destination were discussed.
The study results can provide useful information to local government, tourism bureau,
travel agencies, and other sectors related to tourism for planning, managing, and developing
tourism destination in a scientific and efficient may. |
