| Abstract | At present stage of communication, there is an increasing demand for broadband
network systems for multimedia services. The satellite communication systems are the newly
attractive choices to transmit multimedia traffic because of its advantage over the terrestrial
networks, especially for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) communication satellite systems. The
propagation delay and free space attenuation of LEO satellites are much less than
Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites. Recently proposed LEO systems are all designed
primarily for voice and some data communication. It would be interesting to investigate and
know the performance capability of the proposed LEO system for multimedia. In our study
cases, two constellations of LEO satellites: IRIDIUM and GLOBALSTAR system are
selected to evaluate their performance because they are the first generation of LEO systems.
This research study presents a model to measure the performance of multimedia
transmission through LEO satellite communication systems by numerically evaluating two
important parameters: BER performance, and the propagation delay. The results from this
research achieve the requirements of acceptable level for multimedia transmission
corresponding to both LEO systems proposals. This ensures that the Quality of Service (QoS)
of real-time and non real-time application are guaranteed. |
