| Abstract | Limited availability of fish fingerlings has been a critical issue in promoting inland
fisheries in Sri Lanka. An alternative fish fingerling production system is urgently required to
promote inland fisheries. The study aimed at formulating a management sh·ategy to promote
lake-based hatcheries in Sri Lanka. The Tabbowa reservoir was selected to evaluate the
induced breeding teclmology in reservoirs with participation of local fishers.
Situation analysis was carried out to describe Government involvement to promote the
inland fisheries sector: acquisition of secondary data and institutional surveys and interviews
with key informants in institutes involved in inland fisheries development activities. An
estimation of the annual fingerling requirement was made using available yield prediction
models. Breeding trials were evaluated through comparison of survival rates in different
locations and with different larval feeds. The overall participation of individual fishermen,
their personal qualities and the ability to handle the induced breeding activity at the end of the
trial were assessed to evaluate the effectiveness of transfer of technology. Financial analysis
(profitability & cash flow) was carried out based on the data collected from the field trial.
The present study showed that, the concept of lake-based hatcheries was technically,
economically and environmentally sound under Sri Lankan reservoir conditions. Survival rates
were found to be satisfactory and a mixture of Artemia, soya milk and egg yolk was a suitable
feed for post larvae. Technology transfer was considered to be satisfactory as 22% of the
participants have been trained successfully. Small production groups (natural groups) under
the umbrella of fisheries cooperative, and with supervision of an advisory service with
business interests, has been proposed as a management strategy for lake-based hatcheries.
Preparation of a national management plan for reservoir stocking by the Ministry of Fisheries
is required with the idea of strengthening fisheries cooperatives. The plan should consist of the
annual fingerling requirement of the country as well as of the reservoirs. |
