| Abstract | This research study examines the current economic crisis in Southeast Asia, particularly in the
context of Thailand, and its consequent impact in terms of increased unemployment and
retrenchment. It has been estimated that almost 70 percent of Thai firms are now operating at a
lower capacity than they were in January 1997 and more than 50 percent have reduced their
workforces.
This research attempts to explore the human resource response strategies of companies in
Thailand in response to the economic crisis. Three generic human response strategies of
companies in Thailand in the wake of the economic meltdown are identified
Based on the results of the analysis, companies in Thailand have not simply laid of their
employees in view of the crisis, but instead have adopted different human resource strategies
depending on their perception of the economic crisis, such as divestiture, survival and re |
