| Abstract | There are many dredging work in Thailand at present. The dredging of navigation
channel, harbor and many fishing ports are maintained by the Harbor Department of Thailand.
The disposal of dredged spoils is a big problems nowadays due to environmental consciences of
the people. Therefore, it is essential to study this technique carefully. In United State, this
problem has been studying for a long time. One among these projects concerned dispersion or
spreading of sediment concentration analysis is Mathematical Model for Barged Ocean Disposal
of Waste by the US. Environmental Protection Agency.
Theoretical and experimental studies are performed on the dispersion and settling of barge
disposed wastes in the ocean. A computer program based on the mathematical model has also
been developed by the US. Environmental Protection Agency. Depending on the results of model
with empirical coefficients from previous investigations, the predictions and decisions in the
choices for convenient discharging waste material method. The depth-averaged hydrodynamic
model developed by Vongvisessomjai and Charuskumchornkul (1989) is modified to incorporate
open and moving boundaries and used to compute the depth-averaged tidal currents. There are
three study locations in Gulf of Thailand , they are the Chao Phraya river mouth, the Laem
Chabang port and the Map Ta Phut port. From the results of the model , the ambient situations
were found for using in the water quality model. The waste material is assumed to consist of two
phases, a solid phase characterized by constituents with various densities and fall velocities, and a
liquid phase. The methods of disposal considered include a discharge from a bottom opening
hopper barge, a pumped discharge through a nozzle under a moving barge and a discharge into
the barge wake. These results are for the near-field, which are very important.
The two models are applied to compute tidal field, diluting, spreading and settling
processes in the above study locations. Based on the results, we analyze the good points and
appropriates of each discharge method for individual cases. After that, the choices discharge
method or way of transportation are decided. The Pumping and Discharging into wake methods
are more successfully for the shallow locations, the places which were near the channels, and
especially, when the ambient situation was static. Because, in the near-field the mixing situation
is very strongly . And in the Dumping method, the sinking and settlin'g of waste cloud and
sediment pa1ticles generally occur in the sho1t time. With the deep water port, this method was
appropriate. |
