| Abstract | Electricity plays a very important role in our life or we can say that our modern
life is based on the electricity. With the growth in the electronically-controlled equipment
in the workplace, higher quality supply is more critical than ever before.
A power quality problem can be defined as a problem caused by a change in
current, voltage or frequency that causes a fault or malfunction in an equipment.
Harmonic in one of the problem in Power Quality. Harmonic can distort the Voltage and
the Current. Both electric utility and end electrical users are becoming increasingly
concerned about the quality of electric power. Because load equipment is more sensitive
to power quality variations than equipment applied in the past. Many new load devices
contain microprocessor-based controls and electronic devices that are sensitive to many
types of disturbances.
The increasing emphasis on overall power system efficiency has resulted in a
continued growth in the application of devices such as high-efficiency, adjustable-speed
motor drives and shunt capacitors for power factor correction to reduce losses. This is
resulting in increasing harmonic levels on power systems and has many people concerned
about the future impact on system capabilities.
The main electric power harmonic sources are the converters in nonlinear loads.
These converters are using in electronic equipment like computers, printers, fax
machines, copiers etc. The trend of using these equipment is increasing day by day and
increasing the electric power harmonic generation. When the electric power harmonic
generation is severe at the end users load, it directs to power system which may affect the
other equipment. The affect include: Computer data loss, Erratic process control, Maloperation of robotics, Errors in the metering and instrumentation device readings, Maloperation of protective relays, malfunction of harmonic sensitive electronic equipment,
equipment overheating, Loss of life failure, The remote control system mal-operation on
power line, Telephone interference etc.
Considering all these problems, Electric Power Harmonic become major concern
in Power Quality nowadays. This study is aimed to predict harmonic generation in the
buildings in the Asian Institute of Technology, future harmonic generation trend in these
buildings and the measure to reduce them within standard limits. |
