| Abstract | The extent of limitations imposed by optical fiber non-linearities in a Dense
Wavelength Division Multiplexed regional optical network have been evaluated here. In a
regional optical network, where the system performance is not limited by linear system
degradations such as fiber attenuation, amplifier noise, chromatic dispersion and linear
crosstalk between adjacent channels, the presence of large number of channels in the fiber
and higher optical power, can cause performance degradations in the system.
The fiber non-linearities can lead to the nonlinear phenomenon in the fiber such as
stimulated Raman scattering, stimulated Brillouin scattering, Four Wave Mixing (FWM) and
nonlinear index phase modulation. It has been found that in a conventional regional optical
network where each fiber carries signals in one direction only, stimulated Brillouin scattering
and stimulated Raman scattering will not affect the system performance. In addition if
Intensity Modulation Direct Detection is used for transmission and detection of the signals,
then the impact of nonlinear refraction can be avoided by proper choice of optical filter.
However, FWM always imposes significant limitations in a DWDM regional optical
network and needs to be minimized. A schemes has been designed to avoid the degradations
due to FWM that is equally applicable to both new and already existing cable plant. In
addition, it allows to use low loss dispersion shifted fibers which help to build long
transmission links without any interference due to FWM. |
