| Abstract | Serial Concatenated Convolutional Code (SCCC) is proposed for data transmission over
the downlink of a W-CDMA system employing BPSK modulation and coherent Rake
receiver assuming perfect knowledge of channel side information. Frequency selective
Rayleigh fading channel is considered. Iterative decoding using new sub-optimum Additive
Soft Input Soft Output algorithm proposed in (Benedetto et al., 1996a) is applied for decoding
the SCCC. The effects of correlated fading and fading rate to the perf01mance of the proposed
system are examined. In particular, for mobile velocity 5 km/h and external interleaving delay
10 ms, BER of 10-3 is obtained at Ei/No of about 8 dB, assuming four decoder iterations.
However, as the size of external interleaver increases by factor of ten, corresponding to
external interleaving delay of 100 ms, Ei/No of only 5 dB is required for obtaining the same
BER, assuming same number of decoder iterations. The simulation results show that the
proposed system achieves very good performance, even with the relative simple SCCC
encoding scheme. Moreover, it was observed that the SCCC coded system gives better
performance compared to the convolutional coded system. Therefore, SCCCs are suitable for
low BER data transmission applications in the future mobile radio communications systems. |
