| Abstract | In this study, an expert system for Thailand reference sources prototype was proposed
and implemented using an expert system shell. The automated reference service using this
expert system will allow the user access to information sources directly at anytime. This would
free the reference librarian from routine work and s/he can be involved in more cognitive and
productive work.
In the development of the system the first task was to analyze of the problem domain
"reference services"; to define the scope and nature of expert system; and to define the limits
to the domain of the expert system. The next task was the extraction of knowledge and design
of the knowledge base as a hierarchically related subject list, using production rules. The
inference mechanism used is forward-chaining to reach the goal. Then the system goes to
searching the record(s) of Thailand reference sources kept in the database system. The third
task was the design of the menu interface to limit the domain as a closed-end question in the
reference interview.
This expert system prototype has been developed using EXSYS professional version
4.0. The information sources database system has been developed using FoxPro for Windows
version 2.6. |
