| Abstract | The presence of Cyanobacteria in water not only creates nuisance conditions of
unsightly blooms and deteriorated water qualities like, taste and odor, turbidity and clogging of
filters, but is also a potential organic and inorganic pollutants when viewed critically.
Considering these water quality aspects, the present study is focused to find the effect of
ozonation on coagulation dosage and removal of taste and odor in separate experimental setup.
The study was divided into two parts. The first part principally addresses the effect of
ozonation and coagulation in lakes predominated by Cyanobacteria. Results showed ozonation
enhances the coagulation process. Various ozone and coagulant dosage were applied to attain
the optimal dosage for the treatment of the water samples. It was observed that the optimum
coagulant dosage varied with the initial turbidity of the sample. The study concludes that the
required alum dosage for 80% removal of initial turbidity was around 20-60 mg/Land 100-200
mg/L for Eastin Lake and Pak Phanang reservoir, respectively, and the optimum ozone
concentration was found to be 2-4 mg/L for all the above samples.
Furthermore, it was found that UV absorbance at 260 nm with additional information
such as DOC/E260, E220/E260 were simple, rapid economical and reliable parameters to
evaluate water quality.
In the second part; model water and pure strains where ozonated to remove the musty
taste and odor. The result showed 70-80% of removal was achieved in most of the samples.
The effect was measured by GC-MS using capillary column. |
