| Abstract | In this study, simultaneous effect of commonality and flexibility in a manufacturing
system is discussed. The manufacturing system selected for this is a two-product, two-level
system. First level involves the machining of four different components whereas the second
level involves the assembly operation of two end products from these four parts. Simulation
software SIMPLE ++ is used to develop the model of the existing system. To apply
commonality and flexibility in that system, different possible models are developed by varying
the machine arrangement and processing time. Three performance measures, namely,
makespan, average machine utilization and factor productivity, have been used to compare the
different models with only commonality, only flexibility and both commonality and flexibility
and the existing system. Maximum allowable processing times of the common component for
different machine arrangements with respect to that of the replaced unique components are
determined to help decision making regarding the introduction of commonality and flexibility
to the existing system. |
