| Abstract | Aerobic biological process is used world-widely to treat water and wastewater. If this
process is used in potable water treatment, this process has a limitation that the soluble organic
matter has been detected in its product water. It is still not clear that whether this soluble
organic matter is biodegradable or not. Maybe this organic matter is just slowly biodegradable,
it left because of the incomplete biological treatment of the water treatment plant, so if the
aeration time is prolonged, this organic can be removed. It is also possible that the organic is
not biodegradable. This organic is some biologically refractory compound contained in the raw
water or newly formed organic by-product. So in this case, this organic can only be removed by
the further physicochemical treatment process.
Experimental results reveal that almost all biodegradable organic matter generates the
soluble organic by-product after the aerobic biological process. This soluble organic by-product
is found bio-refractory. No matter what kind of the feed substrate is used, the amount of the
biological refractory organic by-product is about 3% to 5% of the concentration of the feed
substrate.
Experimental results also indicate that some part of the by-product can be adsorbed by
the microorganisms in the absence of substrate, and desorbed in the presence of substrate. |
