| Abstract | A synthetic wastewater with both COD and NH4-N concentration of about 100 mg/L was
used to investigate aerobic and anoxic time needed for satisfactory nitrification and
denitrification in SBR. Raw wastewater was added prior anoxic stage in order to reduce
rapidly the DO level to the level required for denitrification before the addition of methanol as
carbon source.
A highly active heterotrophic, nitrifying and denitrifying population was developed in a
single sludge SBR process through controlled reduction of aerobic and anoxic stages. Eight
runs with different combination of aerobic and anoxic periods were carried out. Time spans in
these stages were reduced as soon as steady removals were recorded. Aerobic period of 3
hours and anoxic period of 2 hours were finally achieved with COD removal of over 70%,
NH4-N removal of over 60% and NOx-N removal of nearly 100%. Total nitrogen removal of
62% was also achieved. Final maximum ammonium oxidation rate, nitrification rate and
denitrification rate were 5.5 mgNH4-N/gVSS.hr, 3.83 mgNH4-N/gVSS.hr and 6.98 mgNOx-N/gVSS.hr respectively.
Mathematical model for nitrification and denitrification based on Monod kinetics
satisfactorily simulated aerobic and anoxic stage performance. |
